What are error handling and recovery best practices for PI and PO?

Since many PI or PO jobs run afterhours and must be run before morning, it is very important that PI or PO interfaces have robust exception handling and can either recover from an exception or communicate information that makes analysis and correction quick and easy for on-call staff.

 

First choice would be how one would discover the error, work around it (perhaps skip one row in a set of data), and continue to complete the rest of the message handling successfully.  Second best option, for when you just can't recover successfully, would be to communicate via logs or email, not just the exception message but the knowledge of the task and the error to recommend solutions to an oncall analyst.

 

Is there documentation or guidance from SAP on how to do error handling and recovery in PI and PO?  Also, please share your own practices and suggestions about what you do in your own space.
